Xtreme's Speedtest iPhone Download Tops 1 Million Downloads
Xtreme Labs Inc. has reported that its Speedtest(TM) application developed for the iPhone has surpassed 1 million downloads.
Speedtest is a simple application that determines the speed or bandwidth of an iPhone connection. Speeds can vary greatly among wireless carriers, but also in various locations within the same carrier network. The test has been run in more than 150 countries and has sent 10 terabytes of data through Carrier networks for characterization - the equivalent to the printed version of the Library of Congress.
Xtreme's Speedtest has recently been released for Android and Blackberry. Speedtest empowers iPhone usersiPhone users download the Speedtest application to find better WiFi networks and evaluate their wireless carrier and determine they are getting the speeds that they pay for. Depending on location, users can also compare competing carrier bandwidth performance, or 2G versus 3G.
Speedtest determines both upload and download speeds. With Speedtest, iPhone users can ensure they are getting the highest bandwidth connection with their iPhone during bandwidth intensive activities and applications such as browsing or downloading media files.
Powerful tool for wireless network carriers
While the Speedtest application has proven very useful to iPhone users, the backend application has also presented significant value for wireless network carriers in terms of characterizing bandwidth performance throughout their networks. This information is extremely valuable to network carriers for monitoring and improving network performance and ultimately the end user experience.
"Now we know which wireless data service in a particular country is reliable and fast," said Sahand Sojoodi, Principal at Xtreme Labs. "The success of Speedtest has resulted in a growing database of mobile network performance of each country and are working with network carriers to provide the intelligence on their network performance."

Palringo adds location, distance and maps to their messaging application for iPhone
Palringo messaging users are now being offered location functionality on for their iPhone.
From today, a user looking down their contact list sees not only the location of his or her Palringo contacts – typically a town name - but also how far away that contact is.
Location and proximity information adds an interesting new layer of social network connectivity. A Palringo user can choose to reveal location to any, all or no contacts, changing this selection at any time. Location can be set manually by the user, or Palringo can detect location automatically, keeping it continuously updated.
“Just knowing where someone is can be really useful, and knowing how far away they are is even better. The prospect of knowing where someone is before you start adds a whole new dimension to your conversation,” said Kerry Ritz, Palringo’s CEO. “It can eliminate worry and will probably mean the end of a lot of unnecessary ‘Where are you?’ calls. And soon you’ll pretty much be able to watch your friend, a few minutes late for your rendezvous, approaching on a map,” he added.
Location and proximity information complement Palringo’s rich messaging service, which already provides the option to send/receive vocal instant messages, picture messages and text-based messages. The Palringo service is designed for use on mobile phones, but versions are also available for Mac OS and other desktop environments.
